What Actually Happens at Your First Gonstead Chiropractic Appointment

Clarence Gonstead the inventor of the Gonstead Technique in Chiropractic

Your first visit to a Gonstead chiropractor is nothing like what most people expect. There’s no cracking your back the moment you walk in the door. Instead, you go through a thorough, data-driven exam before a single adjustment is made – because at Axiom Chiropractic in Charlotte, we don’t adjust until we know exactly what we’re looking at and why.

Why the First Visit Looks Different Here

A lot of people come to Axiom having already been to a chiropractor before. The experience they describe is usually pretty similar – fill out some paperwork, get a quick adjustment on the first visit, and book a follow-up. That approach isn’t what we do here, and there’s a good reason for that.

The Gonstead method is built around a five-criteria analysis that has to be completed before we know where to adjust, how to adjust, and what to expect. Skipping that process and going straight to an adjustment is like a mechanic replacing parts before running a diagnostic. It might help, or it might not – but either way it’s guesswork.

We don’t guess. We assess, analyze, and then act with precision.

What Happens When You Walk In

From the moment you walk through the door, the assessment has already started. Posture analysis begins with observation – how you carry yourself, whether your shoulders or hips sit level, how your gait looks as you move through the space. These visual cues feed directly into what Dr. Tyler or Dr. Megan will be looking for during the hands-on portion of the exam.

You’ll sit down and go through a detailed health history. This isn’t just a formality. Understanding your full symptom picture – when things started, what makes them better or worse, what other health issues you’ve dealt with – helps connect the dots between spinal levels and what your body is experiencing. Every system in your body is supplied by nerves that exit the spine at specific levels, so the history shapes where we focus the analysis.

The INSiGHT Scan

One of the first objective measurements we take is an INSiGHT nervous system scan. This technology measures surface electromyography (EMG) and heart rate variability to give us a picture of how well your nervous system is functioning – not just where you hurt, but how much stress your nervous system is under and where that stress is concentrated along the spine.

This is one of the things that separates Axiom from a typical chiropractic office. Most practices rely entirely on patient-reported pain as their baseline. We use objective data so that when we re-examine you later in your care, we can show you actual measurable changes – not just ask how you feel.

Infrared Thermography

Along with the INSiGHT scan, we use infrared thermography to map temperature patterns along your spine. The Nervoscope instrument runs a dual probe down each side of the spine simultaneously, measuring bilateral temperature differences at each spinal level.

Why does temperature matter? Nerve irritation produces inflammation, and inflammation produces heat. Asymmetrical temperature readings at a spinal level indicate that something is off there – the nerve supply on one side is being affected differently than the other. This is one of the five criteria used in Gonstead analysis to identify subluxations and confirm that an adjustment is warranted at a specific level.

Full-Spine X-Rays

If clinically appropriate based on your age, health history, and exam findings, we take full-spine, weight-bearing digital X-rays. This is a big deal, and it’s worth explaining why.

Most chiropractic offices that take X-rays use sectional films – separate images of the neck, mid-back, and low back. At Axiom, we use full-spine films that capture the entire spine in a single image while you’re standing upright. This matters for a few reasons. First, weight-bearing films show how gravity actually affects your spinal structure – lying down changes the picture significantly. Second, full-spine films allow us to count vertebrae accurately and see the full spinal contour, including how each region relates to the others. Third, they often reveal problems beyond the area you came in for.

Full-spine films also use less radiation than multiple sectional films combined. So you get more information with less exposure.

Palpation – The Hands-On Portion

After the instrumentation and imaging, Dr. Tyler or Dr. Megan will perform both static and motion palpation of your spine. Static palpation assesses changes in tissue tone, texture, and contour at each vertebral level. Motion palpation evaluates how each segment moves – or doesn’t move – relative to the ones above and below it.

Together, these findings confirm and refine what the X-rays and instrumentation showed. Palpation tells us how the problem feels from the outside, which helps determine the exact contact point and line of drive for the adjustment when the time comes.

The Report of Findings

Once the full assessment is complete, we sit down with you and go through everything we found. This is one of the parts of the process patients consistently tell us they appreciate most. Dr. Tyler and Dr. Megan walk you through your X-rays, your scan results, and the palpation findings in plain language – no jargon, no vague explanations.

You’ll understand exactly where the problems are in your spine, why we believe they’re contributing to your symptoms, and what a care plan looks like to address them. That includes how often we recommend you come in, what the expected progression looks like, and what objective re-examination milestones we’ll use to track your progress.

Nobody leaves that conversation confused about what’s going on or what to do next.

The First Adjustment

With the full picture in hand, the first Gonstead adjustment can be delivered with genuine precision. The contact point, line of drive, and force are all determined by the analysis – not by a general protocol applied the same way to every patient.

Gonstead adjustments don’t involve general twisting or rotation of the spine. The correction is specific to the segment that needs it, delivered in a controlled and deliberate way. Most patients are surprised by how targeted it feels compared to what they’ve experienced elsewhere.

After the adjustment, some people feel immediate relief. Others notice changes over the following day or two as their nervous system begins to adapt to the correction. Both responses are normal, and we’ll talk you through what to expect before you leave.

What Charlotte Patients Tell Us After That First Visit

The most common thing we hear after a first visit at Axiom is that people wish they’d come sooner. Not because the adjustment was dramatic, but because finally having a clear explanation for what’s been going on – backed by actual data – changes how they think about their health.

Patients from Myers Park, Cotswold, and across the Charlotte area come in skeptical and leave with a care plan they understand and believe in. That’s the goal of the first visit – not just to start care, but to make sure you know exactly why you’re starting it.

If you’re ready to find out what’s actually going on with your spine and nervous system, we’d love to see you. Book your first appointment online or call us at (704) 469-4772. No referral needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to bring anything to my first visit?

Just yourself and any relevant imaging you may already have, such as MRI or X-ray reports. We’ll handle the rest during the exam. Arriving a few minutes early to complete intake paperwork helps the visit run smoothly.

Will I definitely get adjusted on my first visit?

In most cases, yes – once the assessment is complete and findings are reviewed with you. Occasionally additional information is needed before beginning care, but the goal is always to give you a clear picture and a path forward on day one.

How long does the first visit take?

Plan for about an hour. The exam, imaging, report of findings, and first adjustment together take longer than a standard follow-up visit, which is typically much shorter once your care plan is established.
